Washington University Classics Competition

Eta Sigma Phi

The high schools of the St. Louis area are cordially invited to the second Washington University Classics Competition! The Alpha Xi chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, the classics honorary is hosting an academic competition (Scholar Bowl) type event on Saturday, November 19th, 2016. This competition will be held at the campus of Washington University and run by members of Eta Sigma Phi! This will be not only a great opportunity to get involved in the classics community around St. Louis, but also a chance to test out your Classics skills in competition with other classics students in the area. There will be something for everyone, no matter if you are a beginner or classics expert!

When: Saturday November 19th from 9:00 am to early afternoon

Where: Washington University in St. Louis

Cost: $30 per team, halved if you bring a buzzer system (talk to your school’s academic team about that)

Lunch: Pizza will be provided for everyone.

To register for the event, please email etasigmaphiwustl@gmail.com with your school’s details. Any questions can also be directed to that email address.

How many members play per team?

Similar to Scholar Bowl rules, unlimited players may participate per team, but only four players may compete on a team answering questions at any given time maximum. Fewer players than this are certainly also welcome.

Regarding the time and place…

Competition will begin at 9:30, and we will gather at 9:00 at the latest in a central location. After lunch will be the finals tournament at 1:30, which everyone should make. However, once eliminated, you may leave. This is why the end time isn’t specified. Regarding the specific location, details will be sent out when the exact building is provided by the school.

What is the difficulty like?

There will be questions for everyone. We realize that not everyone is at an AP level, or even at an upper level. At least three quarters of the questions will not be tied to language skills, and just history, culture, mythology, etc. Questions will certainly vary in difficulty, as this is still a competition.
