a. Two of the exams are purely diagnostic and do not require a specific level of performance for continuation in the program: sight exams in Greek and Latin translation (one passage per language), to be given at the beginning of the first year. A faculty member will discuss the exam with each student after it is evaluated. In some cases, a student may be asked to take a second sight exam at the end of the year to mark progress.
- a prospectus for approval of the Graduate Committee, typically in the 4th year
- a dissertation colloquium, typically in the 4th year, where the prospectus is formally presented for questions and discussion
- the written dissertation
- an oral defense of the dissertation and revisions to the written work as requested by the Dissertation Committee, by the end of the 6th year.
