WashU Classics Remembers Mary Merritt Sale

Mary Merritt Sale died peacefully surrounded by her family at her home in Berkeley, California on February 8th, 2017.  Mary was a Professor of Classics and Comparative Literature at Washington University from 1958 until her retirement in 1995.  Friends, colleagues, and former students remember her dedicated and inspiring teaching, especially of Homer, mythology, and Greek tragedy; her service both to the Department of Classics and the Program in Comparative Literature; and her exciting scholarship on Euripides, Sophocles, and the oral nature of Homeric poetry.
