Roman Theater seminar visits the MUNY

No place in North America offers a better sense of what watching a performance in an ancient Roman theater might have been like than St. Louis’ large outdoor MUNY Theater. Accordingly, Tim Moore’s graduate seminar in Roman Theater recently visited the MUNY. After touring the theater, students performed versions of genres that would have been offered in the MUNY’s Roman ancestors: pantomime, mime, and Senecan tragedy. By seating in different sections of the auditorium, students could ponder how the theatrical experiences of different social classes would have varied in the stratified Roman cavea.
